A lot of things have changed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Bowl Championship Series over the last few years. With teams like Boise State and Texas Christian finally beginning to get their due as legitimate national title contenders, the major conferences with automatic BCS berths seem poised to lose their stranglehold on the championship title. To look at the true origins of the breakdown of that stranglehold, one need only go back to Urban Meyer’s time as the coach of the Utah Utes. The Utes play in the Mountain West Conference, one of the smaller NCAA groupings that were not afforded the automatic berth provided to major conference teams when the BCS was first established. As a result, no team from a conference such as the MWC was invited to a BCS game – that is, until Urban Meyer arrived at the University of Utah.

Ready to go

When Urban arrived at the University of Utah, he was well aware that they already had a proven history of winning football. Since their origins in 1892, the Utes program has been in five separate conferences and won those conferences 24 times. With an overall record of 617 victories and 421 defeats, as well as a twelve and three record in their postseason bowl match-ups – the highest percentage of wins by any college program with a minimum of ten appearances – there was little doubt in Meyer’s mind that he was taking over the reins of a program that had a solid foundation on which to build. His public declaration that his Utes team was going to basically play as hard and fast as they could and provide everyone with a show worth watching was a clear sign that he already felt he had the talent in place to compete at any level.

Breaking the BCS mold

The 2003 season’s 10-win and 2-loss victory was clear evidence that his beliefs were correct. With the implementation of the fast-paced spread offense attack, the Utes took on all comers, ended up winning the MWC conference title, and finished the campaign by shutting out Southern Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl. The next year’s campaign involved nothing less than a repeat of the conference championship, a new Utes record for scoring (544 points on the season), and an undefeated record. With that record, the BCS knew that they could no longer ignore schools like Utah, and invited them to the 2005 Fiesta Bowl where they trounced the Big East’s Pittsburgh team by a score of thirty five to seven. That victory, along with the season’s overall results, was enough for the AP to rank them at number four in their final poll of the season.

Though his tenure at the University of Utah was a mere two years, Urban Meyer had managed to break through the BCS wall that separated the mid-level conferences from the so-called majors. The BCS – and the rest of the college football world – at last realized that those major conferences were not the sole repository of quality football in the country.

The Utes themselves would go on to play in another BCS contest in 2009, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in convincing fashion only one year before the Tide would go on to win a national championship.

In the one hundred and sixteen year history of the Arkansas Razorbacks football team, Hogs fans have had a lot about which they could be proud. With more than 650 wins to the program’s credit and fewer than 450 losses, the program ranks in the top 25 of the NCAA when it comes to the best winning percentage. And though they have yet to win a conference title since moving into the Southeastern Conference, the Razorbacks did win a total of 13 conference championships while a member of the old Southwest Conference. Seven of those championships came during the tenure of John “Frank” Broyles, who served as coach for the Hogs from 1958 until 1976.

Playing the game

Like many other college coaches in history, Frank began his football career playing the game – at Decatur in high school, and later as a quarterback at Georgia Tech. His Georgia Tech teams managed four bowl appearances, with Broyles garnering the SEC award in 1944 for Player of the Year. In addition, Frank Broke and held the record for passing yards in the Orange Bowl for more than half a century – with his mark only being surpassed in 2000 by Michigan’s former great quarterback – and multiple Super Bowl winner – Tom Brady. To honor Broyle’s play, he was inducted into not only the Hall of Fame at Georgia Tech, but that of the Orange, Cotton, and Gator Bowls as well.

On to coaching

The beginnings of Broyles coaching career followed much the same path taken by other coaches before and since: one assistant coaching job after another. First as Coach Bob Woodruff’s assistant at both Baylor and Florida, then as an assistant at his Georgia Tech alma mater. His first head coaching job was at the University of Missouri, which he held for one season. He left the team the following year when he was given the opportunity to coach the Razorbacks. Once arriving in 1958, Broyles tenure at the school lasted almost 50 years, as he coached the team until 1976 and then took the job of athletic director. His tenure marked a period of consistent success for the Arkansas program.

Broyles had 144 victories during his nineteen years as head coach of the Razorbacks, with fewer than sixty losses. As if those numbers are not impressive enough, the Coach also led his Razorbacks team to seven dominating Conference titles, leaving no doubt in many analysts minds that Arkansas was always the team to beat on the way to the conference crown. The true jewel in Broyles’ coaching crown was provided by his 1964 Razorbacks team who stormed through the conference on their way to an eventual national title.

Broyles legacy can be seen in the number of his players who eventually went on to become successful coaches at both the college level and in the ranks of the NFL. Coaches who began their careers playing for Frank include such Super Bowl winners as Jimmy Jonson and Barry Switzer. In recognition of his success both as a coach and as an educator, the Broyles Award was created in 1996, and honors the best among college football’s coaching assistants.

Spring time means one thing time for the Boston Red Sox to take the field and to make another run for the post season. There is a lot of hope for the team from Boston this year, many people think that this will be the year that they will go back to the World Series and reclaim their spot in baseball history.

That being said, there is a lot of work that will need to be done to ensure that they are in the picture in the post season. I will be the first to say that the Sox have a decent chance at going all the way when it comes to the post season, the only problem is that they have to make sure that all the gaps that were caused in the off season have been closed.

The team has a strong pitching rotation that will allow them to start strong and to close out a game with a lot of strength. The rotation for the bull pen will be the one area that the Red Sox will have no problems with, there will be a lot of players in the coming months that will reveal themselves as being valued members of the team when it comes to pitching.

There will need to be a lot more in the way of offense than just great pitching that will make the team one of the more dominant forces on the field this season, the Red Sox will need their big hitters to step up and bring the heat, these players will be the heart and soul of getting the team out there and making the big plays. The more power that the hitters bring, the more of a force that the Red Sox will be on the ground.

The Red Sox have the infield and the outfield covered on all bases, there will not be many plays that will get past them, last season the team led the MLB in the most double plays for the year. This great field play will be the key in getting the team to make the plays that will shut the offense of other teams completely down.

In the off season, the players that the team acquired made a lot of people wonder as to what exactly is up in the organization, there were several trades and other deals that made a lot of players and fans look a little crazy at the new roster. These were passed off by the team as key improvements to the roster and that in the end the team will be better for the changes.

The power that will be heading to the plate this season will be some of the strongest that has played for Boston is a long while. There will be a lot of players this season that will be aiming for the outside of the park when they hit their balls. This will as a result lead to several home runs that the opposing pitcher will just have to stand a watch. Expect to receive a souvenir anytime you head out to a Red Sox game this season. This will be a season of home runs for the team.

No matter what you may want to think about the team this season, there will be little doubt that the team will be able to compete with the best of teams this year. There will be a lot of teams this season that will need to have a back up plan when it comes to playing against the Red Sox this season.

Well it is that time of the year again, time to dust off the old crystal ball and see what the future of the Atlanta Braves has in store for 2010. I would love to say that America’s team is going to give the fans their money’s worth this season, but in the end it think it will be best if America just finds a new team.

Now this comes with a heavy heart as this will be the final year that Bobby Cox will be leading the team, Cox has said that this will be his final season coaching the team. That being said there would be no greater gift than to win the World Series, however a trip to the post season will be just as good in the end. Aiming for a World Series win will be asking for way too much.

This is a team that at one point was almost as routine to go to the post season that you could schedule it, then something happened and the team fell into a black hole and has not recovered since. There are a few players that will try making a contribution to the team in their efforts, but the place that needs the most work is the bullpen.

So there is a severe lack of a starting pitcher that is capable of getting the job done from the mound. Well maybe there is a closer that can seal the deal. One that note you strike out as well. There is not a closer that will be able to make up for the lack of leadership in the bull pen.

Now let’s look at the hitting of a baseball. This is one area that the team seems to also have a lot of trouble in getting the job done. Maybe the Braves need to go back to the basics that we all learned in tee ball, aim for the ball and hit it with your bat. I have no idea as to why this concept escapes the team, there is no reason why the Braves should struggle in the hitting department. I say let’s give Bobby Cox a chance to hit the ball, after all this is as good of a chance as any other player will have. Maybe he would actually do better.

In the infield, there will be a lot of issues that have been fixed when it came time to place the Braves in one of the best infields that are out there. This is one of the aspects that the Braves are able to post as being one of their strong points. While there will be a lot of negative aspects to be addressed in the long run, these problems will need to be fixed as soon as possible.

This will be a tough year for the Atlanta Braves to endure, however if all goes well then the Braves will have one of the most prosperous seasons that they have had in quite some time. This would be a great way to send Bobby Cox off as a winning manager in his final year of coaching.

The Crimson Tide of Alabama has been one of the premiere teams in all of college football from the beginning of the sport. The team has garnered an incredible thirteen recognized national championships, as well as eight of the so-called “consensus” titles, as well as numerous conference championship and bowl game victories. Its winning tradition has made it one of the most recognizable teams in America, and makes it one of the most lucrative recruiting centers for elite college players. For a quarter of a century, one man coached the Crimson Tide to almost half of its total national titles. That man, whose tenure at Alabama stretched from 1957 through the end of 1982, was genially known as Bear Bryant.

Arrival of the Bear

When the Bear was hired to coach the Alabama team, the program had just experienced what was for them a period of mediocrity. Four losing seasons in a row had made ‘Bama fans and alumni restless, and the Bear’s hiring – he left a position at Texas A&M – was thought to be a breath of fresh air. The losing halted immediately, as Bryant’s first season resulted in the team winning one more game than they lost. His style of leadership seemed to have the players on the team immediately thinking “victory” and the new attitude played out in winning style whenever they took the field. Three seasons later, the true fruits of the Bryant scheme began to appear on the Alabama tree as the team won the national championship, announcing to the world that Alabama football was back with a vengeance! That was the beginning of one of the most dominant periods in team history, as the Crimson Tide would go on to win a total of 60 games during a six year span in the early 1960s, losing only five times in that same period. That run of victories netted a total of six bowl games, four SEC championships, and three national crowns.

The 1970s and beyond

During the following decade, the Alabama Crimson Tide would win all but two of that decades SEC titles, while garnering three more national championships. During a 1971 game between the Crimson Tide and the USC Trojans, Bear made what would later turn out to have been one of the more historic decisions in Alabama football history. Bryant decided to start the very first black player, John Mitchell. Not only did Bryant’s team win that game, his decision to allow the first African American Alabama player to serve in a starting role on the team changed ‘Bama football forever.

The end of Bryant’s career came after more than two decades as Alabama’s coach, and was – fittingly, some would say – a victory for his Tide in the Liberty Bowl game of 1982. Bryant left the sport with a total of 323 wins, which was at the time the most ever recorded by a college coach. His 25 total seasons with the Tide still represent the gold standard for college football coaching, and many are the coaches who have since claimed the Bear as their inspiration. Bryant passed away in 1983, a mere month after coaching his final game.

ACCELERATION THROUGH PACING:

Hand movements can cause improvement of reading speed. Now I’ll introduce to you the well-known pacing movement. There is one thing for sure about the Boise State Broncos football team – it is one of the toughest in the nation. With talented players at every position, the kids in the blue and orange uniforms have earned a place in the national spotlight – and it’s one that they appear unlikely to relinquish anytime soon. Of course, playing in the Western Athletic Conference doesn’t provide quite the level of national exposure that a team can garner in the SEC or Big Twelve, so the Broncos have had their work cut out for them as they struggled to be taken as seriously as they deserve. Even after posting an undefeated 13 victory season in 2006 – which culminated in their dismantling of the Sooners team in that year’s Fiesta Bowl, ad still another undefeated season in 2009, most analysts and fans still doubted that the team was deserving of a berth on the national championship ticket. That didn’t happen, unfortunately, so the Broncos still fee that they have not yet gotten all of the attention that they deserve. One area in which they always manage to capture the football world’s eye, however, is their football field. It’s a gorgeous shade of… blue. Yes, that’s right – blue.

How to get a blue field

That blue field in Bronco Stadium has been the subject of much consternation and conversation over the last several decades. Alone among all college football programs, Boise State decided to make their field blue in part out of a desire to get the most out of their three quarters of a million dollar Astro turf change in 1985. Since the turf was going to be so expensive anyway, the decision was made that there was no reason to settle for the new Astro turf looking exactly the same as the old. In an attempt to gain publicity for the turf’s installation, the decision makers at the school opted to install the new field covering using one of the team’s uniform colors – blue and orange. Blue got the nod, and the rest is history.

The real advantage

Of course, it was only natural that there would be much speculation over the course of the next two and a half decades that perhaps the blue field, when seen against the blue of the Boise State players’ uniforms, would serve to camouflage the Broncos players and force opponents to play at a disadvantage. Comments to that effect were, however, quickly dismissed in light of the fact that many colleges and professional teams have worn green uniforms that have been similar in color to the grass on which they played, without serious suggestions that they were somehow invisible to their opponents due to the blending of the colors. One coach of another squad was so adamant that the blue field provided no real advantage to the Broncos that he is famously quoted as saying that the real disadvantage his team had in facing the Boise State team came from the fact that the players on those Broncos units had so much talent.

The blue exception

Nevertheless, Boise State is fated to be the sole college team with a football field of blue. The NCAA has made any other such designs illegal, though they still allow the Broncos to retain their field color for as long as they have Bronco Stadium intact.

Broncos fans, and college enthusiasts across the country, can take solace in knowing that the Boise State football team is likely to play on that field of blue far, far into the future.
